Why focus on care experienced young people and care leavers?

According to the Office for Students, "Those with care experience have significantly poorer educational and life outcomes than the general population on average, and are underrepresented in higher education".

Through our work, we are trying to help create more opportunities and close the educational / occupational gaps for care experienced young people and care leavers.

OnTrack Programme

The OnTrack Programme is specifically for care experienced young people and care leavers. During term breaks, we invite care experienced young people and their carers to fun and informational events.

Recently, we have held events at local education providers and partners, including, York St John, Askham Bryan College, University of York and CU Scarborough.

If you want to learn more about our work with care experienced young people and care leavers please do send us an email. We are currently working on a project for 2024/25. Updates to come soon.

York and North Yorkshire Care Experienced Network

What is it?

The network was set up to provide a space in York & North Yorkshire for those who are actively engaged in working with or for care experienced young people to share best practice and discuss challenges/possible resolutions. As a collective voice, the network works together to disseminate evidence of effective regional practice to influence future policy and funding.

What are the objectives?

  • To devise and deliver collaborative initiatives that will meet the needs of care experienced young people in York & North Yorkshire
  • To enable the effective delivery of collaborative outreach activity to all young care experienced learners
  • To ensure any outreach activity is designed and delivered as a planned programme of interlocking interventions
  • To promote the work of the group through active encouragement and dissemination of individual and collaborative initiatives
  • To ensure educational progression opportunities, particularly to FE and HE are promoted and accessible to all care experienced young people
  • To use the network email list to share research projects and other related literature and opportunities
